7 Benefits to Drinking Warm Lemon Water
Aids in Digestion and Liver Detoxification– Warm lemon water acts as a liver cleanser with its high antioxidant content by assisting in detoxification. The lemon juice promotes healthy liver function and is helpful in some liver problems because it strengthens and increases the livers detoxifying enzymes, as well as flushes out unwanted materials and toxins from the body. It also encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid required for proper digestion. Warm lemon water also helps your body absorb & digest nutrients more efficiently, reducing indigestion, constipation and bloating!
Balances pH Levels– Your body functions best in a more alkaline state versus an acidic state. Unfortunately, most people are too acidic from eating too much sugar and grains, the things they expose their skin to, and the environment they live in. This is why drinking lemon water is so vital because lemons are considered one of the most alkalizing foods you can eat. The cool part is that lemons are actually acidic in their natural state, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline. Lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid, weak acids easily metabolized by the body allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the body.
Hydrates Lymph System– The lymphatic system is also responsible for removing toxins from the body. Not only does lemon water cleanse your body, it also hydrates your lymph system which stimulates the elimination process. When your body is dehydrated, you can definitely feel the side effects such as feeling fatigued or sluggish, lack of energy, lack of sleep, brain fog, constipated, and feeling stressed. Do your body a big favor and stay hydrated!
Boosts Your Immune System– Vitamin C is probably one of the easiest and fastest ways to boost your immune system. Lemons are packed with vitamin C. They also contain citric acid, magnesium, bioflavonoid, pectin, calcium and limonene, which supercharge our immunity so that the body can fight infection.
Terrific for Skin– Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which rejuvenates the skin from within your body to give you healthy skin and help reduce wrinkles and spots on the skin. By drinking one cup of warm lemon water every day, it will also dramatically decrease acne problems and keep your skin clear of blemishes.
Boosts your energy– Even just the scent of lemon juice has been shown to improve your mood and energy levels, and reduce anxiety. Plus the detoxifying effect and alkalizing effect of fresh organic lemon juice can improve your energy through the removal of toxins from your body.
Helps you to lose fat– Since lemon juice helps to improve your digestive system, aids in removal of toxins, and cleanses your liver so it metabolizes fat efficiently, this all combines together to help you to lose body fat. Also, there’s a fiber in lemons called pectin, which helps fight hunger cravings. Studies have shown that maintaining a more alkaline diet does help you lose weight faster… yet another reason to add warm lemon water to your daily morning routine!
Now, that we’ve given you 7 benefits, next is explaining how to easily make your own lemon water. Seriously, this is so simple to make and it takes less than 1 minute.
How to Make Lemon Water:
1. Go buy the lemons. I suggest organic lemons if at all possible. It’ll be cheaper to buy in bulk (like in the 1-3 lb bags or larger) instead of buying them individually.
NOTE: Make sure to buy FRESH lemons… NOT bottled lemon juice. It contains sulfites (preservative) that a lot of people are allergic to, plus we’re trying to rid our bodies of these types of things.
2. Wake up the next morning and immediately head straight to the kitchen. Unless you need to use the bathroom and put in your contacts first 🙂
3. Pour yourself an 8-16 oz glass of room temperature purified water. If you have digestive issues or to obtain even greater benefits, I highly recommend using warm water (not scalding hot). This is gentler on your body first thing in the morning compared to ice cold water.
4. Cut a lemon in half and save the other half for the next morning or use to flavor your water throughout the day for extra detoxification.
5. Squeeze the juice of ½ the lemon directly into the glass of water making it look cloudy. Tip: I’ve found that you’ll get more juice using a simple lemon press or juicer than squeezing by hand.
6. Drink this (on an empty stomach) at least 10 minutes before eating any food for the day. Then you may have a cup of coffee if you still feel you need it.
Healthful Tip: Citric acid can damage tooth enamel, so you should be mindful of this. No not brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water. It is best to brush your teeth first, then drink your lemon water, or wait a significant amount of time after to brush your teeth. Additionally, you can rinse your mouth with purified water after you finish your lemon water.
Just like anything else, you won’t reap the many benefits of drinking warm lemon water if you don’t make it a habit each morning. Drinking it randomly here and there is obviously better than never doing it, however you won’t physically or mentally notice the best results either.
A new habit usually takes 28 days to install so I challenge you to make a healthy conscious decision for the next 28 days and give this morning drink a try. This daily trick will help you detoxify and cleanse your body, boost metabolism & energy levels, and help you to lose fat. Not only are the benefits of drinking warm water with lemon endless, it’s one of the simplest and cheapest changes you can make for your body’s appearance and health.
